boot ubuntu from windows 8 bootloader

Hello there,
Here we will see how to Dual boot Widows 8 and Ubuntu Linux from Windows boot loader.

Target : Dual Booting windows 8 and Ubuntu, using windows 8 metro boot loader.
METHOD : Windows 8 Bootloader as primary boot loader, Grub as Secondary boot loader. If you want GRUB 2 as the primary boot menu, check out my previous post. install grub 2 in mbr from ubuntu live disk

How to re install Grub 2 in mbr from Ubuntu Live Disk

Here we will be installing Grub 2 on mbr and boot partition, using Ubuntu Live Disc.

Tool Needed:

Ubuntu Live Disc – Higher than or equal to version 9.10.
I have made use of Ubuntu 12.10 from a USB device.
Visit www.ubuntu.com to download Ubuntu Live Disk.

STEP 1:
Boot from Ubuntu Live Disc.

STEP 2:
Open Terminal from Dash home.

STEP 3:
Change as root user using the following command in Terminal.

# sudo -s

METHOD 1: FROM TERMINAL
To check whether a software is installed, perform the following steps.

STEP 1 :
Open the terminal. You can find the terminal from your Launcher or Dash home.
Go to Dash home and type in the searchbox “terminal”, you will be able to find the application in the result. Click to open it.

Difference between External Desktop hard drive and Portable hard drive.

Hello there,

So, both are actually External and both appears as portable, so what could be the difference between External Desktop hard drive and External Portable hard drive ?

The difference lies in the power and data transfers.

The External Desktop hard drive makes use of two cables – one for the data transfer ( USB cable ) and the other for power transfer ( POWER cable). The portable Hard drive makes use of ONLY ONE cable which acts as both power as well as data transmitters.

Though both are portables, the Desktop hard drive is actually an EXPANSION drive, while the other as its name implies – it is a portable hard drive.

“airmom-ng start wlan0″ does not create mon0 for intel wifi link 1000 bgn – Solution

Operating System	Back Track 5 R1
Trouble	Airmon-ng not responding for Intel wifi link 1000 bgn card
Cause	Older version of Aircrack

Aircrack-ng supports Intel wifi link 1000 bgn card. But the trouble is with the older versions of Aircrack-ng.

Back Track 5 R1 comes with pre-installed Aircrack-ng version 1.1-bt9 which actually doesn’t seems to support Intel Wifi 1000 bgn model cards.

With this older version of Aircrack installed, if you try to execute the command “airmon-ng start <interface>”, it doesn’t creates mon0 instead it just hangs. Refer the screenshot below.

The solution is to simply upgrading Aircrack-ng to the latest version. ( When this post is published , the latest version is ~~1.2-bt9~~ 1.2-bt1 )

To upgrade perform the following commands ,

STEP 1:

First ensure that your trouble is with older version of aircrack. To check what version of aircrack is installed perform this command from the Terminal.

# dpkg -s aircrack-ng

If this displays the version as 1.1-bt9, then proceed further.

STEP 2:

Update the repository lists. You need to have internet enabled for this.

# apt-get update

Wait till all the lists are updated without any error.

STEP 3:

Now update the aircrack-ng to the latest version. The following command will update the Aircrack to the latest version.

# apt-get install aircrack-ng

STEP 4:

If your installation gets completed without any errors, you should be able to start the monitor. Execute the following command to check whether airmon-ng works.
